Admission to reception class and transfer to secondary school – School year 2023/24

The application portal to apply for entry to reception class of primary school and year 7 of secondary education for the school year 2023/24 is now open.

  • If your child’s date of birth falls on or between 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019 you would usually apply for a reception class place.

The national closing date for reception class applications is 15 January 2023

  • If your child is currently in Year 6 at primary school, and typically has a date of birth that falls on or between 1 September 2011 to 31 August 2012, now is the time to apply for your secondary place.

The national closing date for applications is 31 October 2022

The Knowsley application portal is for use by Knowsley residents only, if you live in another authority you must apply on your home authority’s application, but you can name Knowsley primary or secondary schools as preferences if you wish.

The Local Authority produce a composite prospectus (Information for Parents) which provides detailed information to guide parents/carers through the admissions process. Before applying for your primary (reception class) or secondary (year 7) school place for 2023/24, please read the relevant prospectus, as it contains important information regarding the application process and explains how the allocation of school places is undertaken.

The answer to any questions you have about the admission process will most likely be found within these documents but please contact the team if you have any further questions.

The online application portal

All applicants are requested to make an application via the online portal – all you will need to do this is an email account.

If you have received a letter from the Local Authority indicating that your child is expected to start reception class or transfer to secondary school in September 2022, the letter will have an identification number unique to your child. If you enter this number when prompted as you are completing the form, some of your child’s details should appear and then you can add your school preferences. Don’t worry if you haven’t had a letter yet, you can still complete the application by inputting the details yourself.

Once you have completed the application and submitted it, you will receive a confirmation email that it has been submitted to the Local Authority.

Please check the individual school admission policies and requirements and read the relevant admission prospectus before you make your application.

If for any reason you cannot make your application online, please contact the school admissions team to request a paper application form.

Junior School transfer

Transfer to Year 3 in St Margaret Mary's Catholic Junior School is also coordinated. Information about the application process will be sent directly to parents/carers of all year 2 pupils attending St Margaret Mary's Catholic Infant School during the Autumn first half term.

Parents/carers of children attending other infant/primary schools may also wish to apply and should contact the School Admissions Team to request an application form.

The closing date for junior transfer applications to this school is 15 January 2023.

Supplementary Information Forms (SIF)

Some schools have a supplementary information form that applicants need to complete in addition to the Local Authority application if they wish their application to be considered under certain criteria of the admission policy for that school.  Supplementary information forms for Knowsley schools are available directly from the individual schools or can be found on the supplementary information form page

Open events

Parents/carers are recommended to obtain as much information about the schools they are interested in to help decide on preferences. As well as reading the school admission policy and viewing the school website, you can contact the schools directly by email or telephone to request a copy of the school prospectus or specific information.

Details of Knowsley secondary school open events are shown in the table below, for enquiries regarding primary school open events or arranging a visit, please contact the individual primary schools directly.
