Art and Design

The person responsible for developing Art and Design at our school is Mrs R Gray

Art Curriculum Intent

High quality and purposeful Art and Design will stimulate creativity and imagination. It gives children an opportunity to understand the world through visual and tactile experiences and gives them opportunities to explore the world around them by expressing what they see, feel and think through colour, texture, pattern and line and by using different materials and processes. They learn to value and appreciate their own work and that of other artists, by continually developing their own skills and celebrating opportunities for growth with a ‘give it a go’ attitude. Children will take risks and embrace mistakes as part of the creative process, as well as reflecting and evaluating their own work in order to continually improve and make decisions to produce something they are proud of and that is meaningful. They will be encouraged to explore their own talents and given enrichment opportunities through trips and visitors to foster them. They are taught to appreciate and enjoy the arts and learn that art from different times and cultures enriches all of our lives within our locality and the wider world. Art and design will enhance their understanding of contextual knowledge within other curriculum subjects by broadening their experiences and use of vocabulary. By expressing their emotions through art, children will deepen their Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development.

Our Art and Design Curriculum aims to inspire children and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. It is designed to give children every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talents and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond through the study of a wide range of artists and craft people.
