Welcome to Year 6
Class Teacher: Mr A. McNamara
Classroom Teaching Assistant: Mrs J. Pauls and Mr Sentia
This term our Learning Tree topic is Central and South America. We will be studying the geography of the area, looking at biomes, deforestation and climate change. For the second part of term, we will then be studying the Ancient Mayans, their history, struggles and legacy.
In English, we will be studying three books: The Rain Player, Can we Save the Tiger? and Some Places More than Others. Two of these books are heavily linked to our Learning Tree Topic.
In Science, we will be making circuits in our Electricity unit.
In DT this term, we will be designing and making our own healthy food and in PE we will be learning Basketball, where we will pass, dribble, shoot, attack and defend.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
PE kits are needed every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.
READING:
Reading regularly and for sustained periods at home as well as in school is vital. This will improve fluency, stamina and understanding which will help your child achieve the expected standard in reading for their age-group by the end of Y6. I expect children to read at least 5 times a week and for at least 10 minutes per sitting.
The children will be given reading books to take home which can be changed as often as is necessary and they are also welcome to choose books from our school library or read books from home.
Please encourage your child to read regularly and complete their home-reading record which should be taken home and returned to school daily.
SPELLINGS AND HOMEWORK
Spellings will be given out each week on a Friday and our weekly spelling test will be on the following Friday. Spellings should be practised for a short time each day if possible: not just the night before the test!
The children also receive weekly Mathematics and English homework. Please ask your child if they have completed their homework and remind them to make sure it is returned to school on time. Homework is given out on a Wednesday and must be in school by 9 am on Monday. Homework is the responsibility of the child and not parent. Failure to having homework in will result in your child missing break and completing extra work.
